Rainbow Chamber of Commerce Announces 2014 Foundation Scholarship Opportunities

Since 2008, the Rainbow Chamber Foundation has awarded 22 scholarships to LGBTQA and LGBTQA-supportive students. The Foundation has awarded between two and six scholarships of varying sizes each year to students enrolled or planning to enroll in local community college, university or vocational education programs. This year, the Foundation plans to award four scholarships plus a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) scholarship funded by the Chamber’s corporate partner, SMUD. Each of the 2014 scholarships will be for $1,000. All scholarships are funded through individual or corporate donations and fund-raising events.

The application criteria for the scholarships are:
*Applicants must reside in or plan to attend a university, college, or school in one of the following counties: Amador, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Sierra, Solano, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tuolumne, Yolo, and Yuba.
*The applicant must be enrolled in the 12th grade of high school or in a university or college, or a qualified vocational school, or intend to be so enrolled in September 2014.
*The applicant must have a minimum 2.9 cumulative grade point average.
*The applicant must submit a fully completed scholarship application, which includes a written essay.

Applications for the 2014 Rainbow Foundation scholarships will open March 01, 2014. Deadline for submission of completed applications is April 30, 2014. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee consisting of local business professionals and community leaders; recipients will be announced by June 5, 2014.

Scholarship recipients are requested to be the Chamber’s guests at its annual gala event, a fundraiser for the scholarship fund, scheduled for September 16, 2014.

The Chamber and its Foundation have plans in 2014 for several addition fundraisers and events which include a fund-raising brunch in May, a luncheon for scholarship recipients, a Drag Queen Bingo fundraiser with local publication Outword Magazine in April, a workshop on applying for scholarships in February at the Sacramento LGBT Center, and access to a national LGBTQA internship program.

Mr. O’Shea along with fellow Chamber Board member, Jennifer Kennedy, are co-chairs of the Rainbow Chamber Foundation.
